-Thomas Merton
"Spiritual direction, is, in reality, nothing more than a way of leading us to see and obey the real Director - the Holy Spirit hidden in the depths of our soul."
I've wanted a spiritual director for years. Then I realized that what I more urgently needed was a counselor. I went for several years on and off, and now Dan and I are going together. It's good stuff, I think everyone should have a counselor.
But that meant that my spiritual director search was temporarily put off... until a few weeks ago when I finally got up the courage to find one. And I did!!! Today I met with her for the first time, she's of an indeterminable age, is a retired Episcopalian deacon and lives out in the "country" in Kaneohe. She's an amazing listener. Just walking into her house felt like walking into a monastic cell - the place was absolutely bathed in prayer. It felt both weighty and light at the same time. Plus there were Byzantine icons everywhere. Absolutely beautiful.
At the end we prayed with the wind blowing all around us, chimes singing in the background, and I could barely get up off the couch when it was over. Good stuff.
Maybe I can fire my counselor now. (Just kidding Burt, you're awesome too!!)

How wonderful Rebecca! I'm so glad that you have found someone to talk too.
Thanks Anita...
Although it would be nice to have people in one's life we didn't have to pay to get to listen to us drone on and on!!
P.S. I'm currently working on an e-mail to you! :)
Becca, God is placing so many amazing people in your life. Your spiritual director's presence and house sounds like a little retreat, very peaceful and comforting. Praying that the Lord would meet you there everytime you go, that you would experience His calming, healing presence. I want to keep hearing about how this is going!
Hi Jana!
Thanks for your prayers too, I think I wouldn't have been able to make this move even years ago. :) And I'm scheduled to see her next Monday, so I'll keep everyone posted! :) :) Hope you guys have a great day.
Oh no...I didn't even think that it would cost. =( Yeah, that's too bad.
It's like the chiropractor...it's costly, but it works...so we either suffer physically...or suffer a bit financially. Your well being is very important. You can't put a price tag on that!
How did you find her?
Hi Jess! Sorry for belatedly answering your question...
I found her from the spiritual directors international website. (I think it's sdiworld.org). A few books I LOVE have referred to it in passing, so I decided to give it a try. You definitely want to talk to the person first, some of them are more christian than others... I almost went with a very cool Catholic woman, but this seemed like a better fit.
